Happy Birthday Dan!

Dan's words of wisdom on his birthday (this is what he said as soon as he woke up this morning!)..."So today will be the longest birthday I ever have." I guess since we are changing time zones during our flight to California, he will get three extra hours to celebrate!

He got a new digital camera for his birthday, so check back for pictures from California during next week.

Fun Weekend in South Carolina

Dan and I were able to take a quick trip to South Carolina this past weekend. We flew down Friday night and headed back Sunday afternoon. One of Dans friends got married so we had a good reason to make the short trip. We had a great time even though it was only for two days!



I think you all know already, but Dan's sister-in-law is pregnant. Our niece is due August 20th. How exciting!











If you remember Grant from the wedding, he was the one getting married. This was at the reception.

Bay to Breakers

This past weekend I walked in a 12K road race with 60,000 of my closest friends in San Francisco. I'm not sure how many people really run though - someone on my team summed it up well by saying it is a mixture of Mardi Gras, Halloween, and a beer festival. Most people wear crazy costumes (many wear nothing at all) and drink the entire time. I walked with a team of about 40 people and we had a great time! We were ping pong players. Some of the guys built a table that we rolled with us that held 2 kegs, about 500 ping pong balls, and conveniently had handles for moving keg stands. Here are some pictures:

This is walking over to the race. It was about 7:30AM here and the cops were not at all bothered by the 100's of kegs being wheeled around the city...
The moving keg stands were harder than they looked but it was really a lot of fun! Here are some of the massive crowds
It took us about 6 hours to walk the entire 7.4 miles. The winner of the race finished in 34 minutes I think. Most of our team actually never made it to the finish line because they opened the streets back up after 4 hours. A few of us walked ahead of the group so I actually did make it to the finish line... it was gorgeous!

I justed wanted to say hello .  I havent been on in a while so i decided today i would actually leave a message.  I am hopefully planning on spending the 4th at the camp.  I hope there will be many others!! I also wanted to tell you guys how lonely meme has been lately.  And how much she loved andrea's mothers's day card.  Aside from the casino meme is obsessed with mail.  She must ask a million times a day if she got any mail.  So i was thinking that if everyone who reads this sends her a little card it would totally make her day.  And if you really wanted serious points, you could even throw in a few scratch tickets!

Anyone know if the camp is open yet?

 

Did you all hear that the camp is no longer rented the week after the 4^th of July?  Now you have.  Who’s planning on going up and when?  I am going up on the 3^rd and staying through the weekend.  I’m going to learn a few new songs on the guitar for some sing a longs – any requests?  I think we’re going to need sequels to “Big bright lights” and “Chompin on Kevin’s smore”.

While Mere was Reading...

Well while my lovely sister was reading all weekend I decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a limo tour of some Napa Wineries. My friend Blair from home was out for the weekend visiting her sister and brother-in-law near me so we spent the weekend in Napa - it was a lot of fun! That is Blair, her cousin Kemely and I tasting at VSattui in the private wine cellars...

Anyways, my real reason for the post is to pass along a fun website I found for all of those Splenda lovers out there: http://www.splendidlife.com It is a new website that we just published where you can buy cute things and learn about different ways to use Splenda. Looking for a good read?

This past weekend, I was doing anything I could to keep from writing the first 1/3rd of my thesis (which is due tomorrow!). This led me to reading a book, which I haven't done in a long time. If anyone is looking for a good book, easy read, and not too long, check it out... "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom.

If you click the other box, you can type your name in how you want it to appear. There is no need to write anything in the second box that says your web page. Family Weekend?

When is family weekend?  Do we have any crazy event’s planned yet?  I think we should do a pig roast!! Anyone else?!?  We had a pig roast at my apartment in Boston two years ago and it was awesome!! The pig was great and there was plenty for everyone.  And while it’s cooking would be a perfect time for some cornhole, horseshoes, card tournament, etc… quality family time!

Back From Central America

We are back safe – with stories, photos and diarrhea!  We cruised the streets of lakeside villages on motorcycles, we flew through the jungle canopy on ziplines, we climbed to the top of ancient Mayan ruins, we swam naked in the most beautiful place in the country (it was the most beautiful even before we were naked there),   we climbed through caves that housed Mayan sacrifices, we stood on a volcano 10’ from molten hot lava, and one night we even wore dresses and played pool.  It was an amazing trip!

Does anyone else find the pictures released yesterday of the Virginia Tech killer very disturbing? Is there really a need to publish all of these pictures, especially the ones where the gun is pointed at the camera?

Free Lunch at Gus & Paul's

So when I was on jury duty I ate at Gus and Paul’s one day and put my business card in the fishbowl to win a free lunch (that is basically all I use my business cards for haha – this is the third thing I’ve won!).  So I guess I blew the surprise with that last sentence, but I won the free lunch for up to 15 people at Gus & Paul’s downtown.  The Ameritrade financial advisor, Tom Zimmer, that provides the lunch and 5 minute talk on what he does is a Cathedral grad one year back from me, which may have influenced my chances of winning (Niiiiiiicce (Borat style)).  I don’t think I will be able to make it back to use the lunch so if anyone wants it let me know.  You could even make it a Robillard blog party lunch (like “block party”).  Hahaha.  OK let me know

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die. This is so priceless, and so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today. A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now is somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank:

Family Member:"I am calling to tell you that she died in January."
Bank:"The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."
Family Member:"Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."
Bank:"Since it is two months past due, it already has been."
Family Member:So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"
Bank:"Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!"

My life lately

Hey everyone,

I never write on here anymore, so I thought I would let you all know that I'm still alive and well. I just got back from Spring Break playing Ultimate Frisbee in Savannah Georgia. We stayed on Tybee Island outside of Savannah and it was gorgeous and sooo much fun! I'm sad to be back at school, but Spring is finally here, so it'll be ok. Only 6 more weeks until the end of the semester and then I get to go to Vegas for a vacation with my friend's family and then enjoy the summer working (I don't know where yet).

Guess who's coming to speak at my school in May . . . the Dalai Lama! Isn't that crazy? I still don't understand why, but Smith and Hampshire students and faculty are the only people who can go, so I'm going to get to see the Dalai Lama and listen to a speech. I just thought that was cool and thought I would let you all know.

Robillards in Guatemala

Kevin and Paul will be traveling to Guatemala for the last two weeks in April.  We are meeting some friends there who operate a non-profit school near Antigua.  We’ll be checking out much of the country, including Tikal, a major Mayan city with a ton of ruins to check out. 

 

Guatemala ended 30 years of civil war in 1996 and has been steadily developing ever since.  This is part of the reason that their school system is not the greatest and why my friends joined Los Patojos – www.lospatojos.org if you want to check them out.

 

I’ll post some more stuff about Guatemala when I get the chance.

Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy.   He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Mary.
 
 He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step.   As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump.   A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.
 
 Managing not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding.   He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood.
 
 He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed.
 
 In the morning, Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room.
 
 She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?"
 
 Flynn said, "Why you say such a mean thing?"
 
 "Well," Mary said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror.

Worst Travel Luck EVER!!!

So it is official...I think I have the worst travel luck ever!

Last time I tried to come home from California was around Valentines Day. Dad and I almost got stuck in Charlotte and when I flew out the next day the airline "lost" my bag for 3 days, just to find out that it was at the Atlanta airport the entire time!!!!!

This time I am flying back for 2 weeks for training for my job. My class (about 50 people, including Internationals) have had plans to go out in NYC for Saint Patrick's day since July!!! Everyone has been really excited all week. This morning I checked my flights several times and everything seemed good to go so my car picked me up and away to the airport we went. In the 30 minutes that it took us to get to the airport my flight got cancelled. I was a little disappointed but figured I could get out tomorrow and still make SOME of the party but unfortnuately I was wrong again!!! I offered to fly out of 3 different airport, into 5 different airports, and this gets me in on Monday night.

To save some money I decided to take a shuttle back to my apartment from the airport instead of the car service. I made friends with my 7 van mates, heard about how one woman teaches english as a second language and used to live in a wigwam, and got a 2.5 hour tour of the Silicon Valley before I got back to my apartment. Needless to say I won't be doing that again any time soon!

So I think that this makes it official...WORST TRAVEL LUCK EVER!!!!

All Settled in California - Part 2

So here are the last few pictures of my apartment...

I love my porch! It's perfect for reading and enjoying a nice glass of wine - and it's really big!



Here is my bedroom. It isn't as cute as my furniture but it's good enough for 8 months!


So you can see the only part of the apartment that isn't unpacked is my dresser...because apparently jewelry boxes aren't in season? Very strange...



I have a really big bathroom too! Lots of storage space of all of my J&J goodies from the e-store!



So that's it. Casa de Andrea is ready for visitors!!!

All Settled in California

I finally arrived in California late Wednesday night and my apartment finally feels like home! I spent the end of the week and weekend unpacking.

All of my stuff that I shipped was supposed to arrive on Friday morning so on Thursday evening I decided to run to the grocery store. I returned to find that I had missed UPS so on Friday morning I had to carry all 13 of my boxes across the apartment complex and up 2 flights of stairs!!! It was my work out for the day!

St. Patrick's Day in Hoboken

This past weekend was the big St. Patrick's Day celebration in Hoboken. Andrea was in town and we had friends over our place to hang out and watch the parade. Hoboken gets a little out of control during the celebrations. The lines at the bars start around 8 AM!!! We didnt make it to the bars, but had plenty of fun enjoying green mimosas to start the day off right. We also watched the parade from our stoop, it doesn't get much better than that!

This weekend will be Andrea's last in West Springfield before she moves to California. We are celebrating downtown Friday night. Hi everyone just a note to let you all know that Michael is doing well. He is home from the hospital. He had  TIA which is a small stroke. His lasted about a minute and was very scary. He was trying to talk to me and everything came out garbled. He said he knew what he wanted to say but his brain could not make his mouth say it. He has had a million tests so everything else about him is fine. The last test was an echo cardiogram and they did find a hole in his heart. They said he has probably had it since birth but that could well be what caused the stroke. we are going to the doctors tomorrow and will get more info. Right now he is fine and out with his friend. It was a really scary thing and I hope it never happens again. Thanks for prayers. Love Maryellen

Fun in NYC

I gotta give it up to Dan – twice I have come to New York City for one night each time and he has met up with me both times. Meredith had class and was too tired to make it out but seemed to want to. Next time I am going to have to stop by the condo and check that out.

Also for those of you who know Stacy Manning, she had a baby girl this morning – 8 pounds and some ounces and curly dark mop of hair.

How is your Friday going??

When do you officially know you are not going to have a good day? I am extremely tired this morning because I drank a latte in class last night to stay awake and then I couldn't fall asleep last night (go figure!) As I was getting ready this morning I made my little pot of coffee as normal, and when I was looking for my coffee mug I take with me to work everyday I realized that I had left it in my car yesterday. I dont know where to get coffee around the office because I just moved my office to Manhattan. So, after much debtaing, I decided to bring the little coffee pot to the car with me and then pour the coffee into my mug. What a wonderful idea! As I am warming up my car I find the mug in my car, and guess what?? I was drinking water out of it last night and now it is frozen solid and I cant get the cover off! Now what do I do?? I am driving a standard car with a little coffee pot next to me that doesn't have a solid cover to prevent it from spilling. So I try to drive to work one handed while using the heat to defrost the mug which froze in my car last night (did I mention it is only 9 degrees today?). After about 15 minutes I finally get the mug open and I am able to dump the water out and pour the coffee in. When I take my first sip....it is cold!! So, here I sit at my desk drinking cold coffee, not being able to leave the office because I lost my work car keys on Tuesday. Can I just say.....

Slow Blogging Day....

The blog has gotten a little slow, so how about hearing how everyones New Year is going!! Maryellen, do you have any more elevator comedian jokes?? I love them!

Dan and I have found a new addiction....spinning class! Sitting in a dark room, pedaling away, music blaring, envisioning the "hill" we are climbing up. Doesn't that sound like fun! On MLK Day, I dragged Dan with me to try out the first class because I was afraid to go alone. Why? I have no idea. Dan was ready to kill me the next day because it hurts your butt to ride a bike for that long. Since then we have each gone to class a couple more times. It is very addicting and hopefully is something I will stick with since I can no longer attend my step class :-( I plan to go to spinning class tonight (if I finish my homework)

Can someone please post the schedule of family get togethers on the blog?  I have no idea when we are meeting up and whatnot.  BTW I got the best yankee swap gift AND I now know the actual rules so we won’t go through a fiasco again.  The reason I know the rules is because at our retail dinner last night we did one and my huge bottle of black sambuca got taken by the number one – and I ended up with a regifted gift basket.  At least the chocolate covered pretzels are delicious!

Thoughts and Prayers to Sister Joan and her family

Paula asked that we pass along that Sister Joan's brother, John, passed away on Thursday. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 from Tazzini Funeral Home with a Funeral Mass in St. Michael's Cathedral at 10. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-9 PM.

Let's Make Mimere Happy...She is So Cute!!

When Mimere was asked the other day what her family did for her 89th Birthday, she responded "Nothing!" She is so silly! To show her how much we love and adore her, we are going to have a birthday cake (Again!) for her on Sunday. What we would like is for everyone to bring a scratch ticket. and we mean "A", as in only one,...don't get carried away! She will be the happiest 89 year old ever....all for $1!!

Family News

Kevin was in an accident and he fell 20 feet on the rocks. He then had to crawl 2 miles to the bottom of the mountain then drive to the hospital. He has a broken foot and is in a lot of pain. Prayers, get well cards, calls, etc. would help to cheer him up, well they would cheer me (Paula) up and I think they would cheer him up also.

Also, Elizabeth was walking on high heels, fell and tore some tendons and she is also on chrutches. If anyone has any more information, please pass it on.

Last update from Kenya before I leave

Hey Family,
I realized I hadn't really updated you guys in a while so I thought I would write on here before I went to bed. Everything is still amazing! We did our big project over the past week or so. My group's project was on agriculture in a swamp about an hour away. We went out there everyday for four days and split up into groups of two with a guide for each group and we interviewed the Maasai people living in bomas around the swamp and the non-Maasai people cultivating in the swamp. We also created a map of the swamp using GPS. It was basically the best experience I've ever had. Most of the people here are soo friendly and welcoming. The guides were awesome too. I am going to try to help one of them get a scholarship to go to school in the U.S. when I get back. However, after the research was very stressful. We did 90 boma interviews and 81 cultivator interviews and had to put all that info into tables and do statistics tests and I personally created 4 maps. Then we each had to write a paper on it. My paper was 17 pages without the tables and stuff and it was 50 pages with that stuff. Pretty ridiculous really. But I got an A- for the whole course, so that's good. The paper writing ended on Thursday, and life has been good since then. We went to Amboseli National Park again yesterday and it was soooo much fun. We saw hyenas eating a gazelle and a hippo out of the water trying to fight buffalo and we saw lions again. It was sooo cool! On the way home we were all quiet and thinking about how sad we were going to be to leave, now that's like the forbidden subject cause everyone is so sad.
On another note, I do know all about the whole travel carry-on restrictions and it stinks. All we can carry is a clear plastic bag. It'll be alright though, I'll survive.
Lastly, Mom, be ready to take me out to eat as soon as I get to the airport cause I want some American restaurant food! And I want a HOT shower as soon as I get to the house! If it weren't for those two things, and all of you of course, I don't think that I would ever go home. Unfortunately this did have to come to an end though, but I'm so glad I came and had this wonderful experience.

Kristin's Bone Marrow Donation

We all know tomorrow is Kristin's big day! As of this morning, she was feeling pretty well with some pain in her lower back. She will head up to New Hampshire tonight and stay at a hotel across the street from the hospital. She has to be at Pre Admission Testing at 6:45 AM tomorrow! Throughout the day, my mom will call and give me updates and I will update this blog as much as possible. Since the phones don't work in the hospital, it will be easier for everyone to check the blog regularly than to have my mom trying to call a million people throughout the day. We all wish Kristin good luck...this is truly an awesome thing to do for someone!

Well, we had another successful Family Weekend...minus a few key players (Julie, Gail, Amy, Michael, and Brian). I will make sure I post the pictures once I get a chance to put them on the computer. what's going on?

Hey family,
How was family weekend??? I went on here hoping for an update about what fun I missed and there isn't one. I'm beginning to think this blogg is not frequently checked by anyone, surprise surprise. Kenya is still amazing by the way. I would put more pictures on here but it takes too long and we implemented a 20 minute internet time limit today. I sent all my postcards out today so you should get them before I get home hopefully. I sent them to all the parents, so if you don't live with your parents anymore, they'll have to show it to you, sorry. Well I don't really have much to say and I have to get back to doing all the work we have here; its a lot. So, I'm going to go, but I expect a blogg about how family weekend went soon!
