Vegas and Vermont

So my trip to Vegas was a lot of fun. For those of you who don't know, I went with my friend and her family for 5 nights over memorial day weekend. Although apparently I did not see anything that Aunty Paula wanted me to see, I had a great time. We saw Cirque du Soleil; the one called Love with all the beatles music and it was amazing. Those people are so talented I was in awe the whole time! We also saw Wayne Brady. He does a show in Vegas that is hilarious and incorporates a lot of stuff he did on Whose Line is it Anyway. I also got to walk the strip and see all the casinos, New York New York, and Paris. And one of the best parts was that we ate in some amazing restaurants. If any of you watch Top Chef, we ate in the restaurant of the bald judge (I forget his name) and it was soo good. We had steak dinners and I even liked it (I normally don't like steak). We also took a drive through the desert and saw the landscape, it was so beautiful! Unfortunately I did not win any money, but I did get to relax and enjoy a vacation with one of my best friends from school and her awesome family.

On another note, I am planning on going to Vermont this weekend if anyone would like to join me. I want to go up on Thursday night and come home on Monday. I would love some company for the whole time or anytime in between! I might be bringing my friend Erica, who I went to Vegas with, but I am not sure, depends if she wants to travel more since she has been on the move since school ended.

California #2

Today we ventured out to Muir Woods to check out the Redwood trees. On the way out we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. We were able to stop and get some good pictures since it was actually a pretty clear day in San Francisco. After Muir Woods, we went to Golden Gate Park and checked out the Rose Gardens which were beautiful. We also drove down Lombard Street and then Dan was on a mission to "find Danny Tanners house." Andrea did some research and found the address so Dan was happy.

Gorgeous! Thankfully we had a clear day. If we had gotten up a little bit earlier we could have seen the whales swimming back to sea! That is all they have been talking about on the news here...I am glad they are finally safe!








One of the many pictures of the HUGE redwoods! We did a 1.5 mile hike through the woods. It was so relaxing to be in the woods with peace and quiet. There definitely aren't places like this in New York City.

Absolutely beautiful! They had a rose garden in Golden Gate Park with rows and rows and different rose bushes. I wish all roses bloomed to look like this one. In my opinion.....perfect!

California #1

I promised to update from California, so here we go...

Dan's birthday was cut short by an hour when we missed our connecting flight in Salt Lake City on Thursday and got stuck there for the night. But, we still made it to San Jose pretty early on Friday. We headed out to Monterey for the weekend. First, we biked part of the 17 mile drive. We got really lost and ended up biking a long time up a lot of huge hills! Saturday we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and then drove down through Big Sur...it was absolutely beautiful! Sunday we had ticket to the Giants game. We got to see Barry Bonds hit home run #746. They love Barry in San Francisco. Monday morning we went to the Winchester Mystery House and then picked up Andrea at the airport. She led us up to Picchetti Winery where we did a wine tasting, and then we had dinner with out old neighbors in Mountain View. Today Andrea went back to work (ha ha!) and Dan and I went into San Francisco. We did a city tour and of course Dan had to try out some local beers at a bar in San Francisco. Back to being tourists tomorrow!

Picchetti Vineyards had peacocks running around the premises. Of course Dan had to chase them! We had some great wine, but I am still looking forward to Napa Valley!

Dan's words of wisdom on his birthday (this is what he said as soon as he woke up this morning!)..."So today will be the longest birthday I ever have." I guess since we are changing time zones during our flight to California, he will get three extra hours to celebrate!

He got a new digital camera for his birthday, so check back for pictures from California during next week.

Fun Weekend in South Carolina

Dan and I were able to take a quick trip to South Carolina this past weekend. We flew down Friday night and headed back Sunday afternoon. One of Dans friends got married so we had a good reason to make the short trip. We had a great time even though it was only for two days!



I think you all know already, but Dan's sister-in-law is pregnant. Our niece is due August 20th. How exciting!











If you remember Grant from the wedding, he was the one getting married. This was at the reception.

Bay to Breakers

This past weekend I walked in a 12K road race with 60,000 of my closest friends in San Francisco. I'm not sure how many people really run though - someone on my team summed it up well by saying it is a mixture of Mardi Gras, Halloween, and a beer festival. Most people wear crazy costumes (many wear nothing at all) and drink the entire time. I walked with a team of about 40 people and we had a great time! We were ping pong players. Some of the guys built a table that we rolled with us that held 2 kegs, about 500 ping pong balls, and conveniently had handles for moving keg stands. Here are some pictures:

This is walking over to the race. It was about 7:30AM here and the cops were not at all bothered by the 100's of kegs being wheeled around the city...
The moving keg stands were harder than they looked but it was really a lot of fun! Here are some of the massive crowds
It took us about 6 hours to walk the entire 7.4 miles. The winner of the race finished in 34 minutes I think. Most of our team actually never made it to the finish line because they opened the streets back up after 4 hours. A few of us walked ahead of the group so I actually did make it to the finish line... it was gorgeous!

I justed wanted to say hello .  I havent been on in a while so i decided today i would actually leave a message.  I am hopefully planning on spending the 4th at the camp.  I hope there will be many others!! I also wanted to tell you guys how lonely meme has been lately.  And how much she loved andrea's mothers's day card.  Aside from the casino meme is obsessed with mail.  She must ask a million times a day if she got any mail.  So i was thinking that if everyone who reads this sends her a little card it would totally make her day.  And if you really wanted serious points, you could even throw in a few scratch tickets!

Anyone know if the camp is open yet?

 

Did you all hear that the camp is no longer rented the week after the 4^th of July?  Now you have.  Who’s planning on going up and when?  I am going up on the 3^rd and staying through the weekend.  I’m going to learn a few new songs on the guitar for some sing a longs – any requests?  I think we’re going to need sequels to “Big bright lights” and “Chompin on Kevin’s smore”.

While Mere was Reading...

Well while my lovely sister was reading all weekend I decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a limo tour of some Napa Wineries. My friend Blair from home was out for the weekend visiting her sister and brother-in-law near me so we spent the weekend in Napa - it was a lot of fun! That is Blair, her cousin Kemely and I tasting at VSattui in the private wine cellars...

Looking for a good read?

This past weekend, I was doing anything I could to keep from writing the first 1/3rd of my thesis (which is due tomorrow!). This led me to reading a book, which I haven't done in a long time. If anyone is looking for a good book, easy read, and not too long, check it out... "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom.

Family Weekend?

When is family weekend?  Do we have any crazy event’s planned yet?  I think we should do a pig roast!! Anyone else?!?  We had a pig roast at my apartment in Boston two years ago and it was awesome!! The pig was great and there was plenty for everyone.  And while it’s cooking would be a perfect time for some cornhole, horseshoes, card tournament, etc… quality family time!

Back From Central America

We are back safe – with stories, photos and diarrhea!  We cruised the streets of lakeside villages on motorcycles, we flew through the jungle canopy on ziplines, we climbed to the top of ancient Mayan ruins, we swam naked in the most beautiful place in the country (it was the most beautiful even before we were naked there),   we climbed through caves that housed Mayan sacrifices, we stood on a volcano 10’ from molten hot lava, and one night we even wore dresses and played pool.  It was an amazing trip!

Does anyone else find the pictures released yesterday of the Virginia Tech killer very disturbing? Is there really a need to publish all of these pictures, especially the ones where the gun is pointed at the camera?

Free Lunch at Gus & Paul's

So when I was on jury duty I ate at Gus and Paul’s one day and put my business card in the fishbowl to win a free lunch (that is basically all I use my business cards for haha – this is the third thing I’ve won!).  So I guess I blew the surprise with that last sentence, but I won the free lunch for up to 15 people at Gus & Paul’s downtown.  The Ameritrade financial advisor, Tom Zimmer, that provides the lunch and 5 minute talk on what he does is a Cathedral grad one year back from me, which may have influenced my chances of winning (Niiiiiiicce (Borat style)).  I don’t think I will be able to make it back to use the lunch so if anyone wants it let me know.  You could even make it a Robillard blog party lunch (like “block party”).  Hahaha.  OK let me know

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die. This is so priceless, and so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today. A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now is somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank:

Family Member:"I am calling to tell you that she died in January."
Bank:"The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."
Family Member:"Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."
Bank:"Since it is two months past due, it already has been."
Family Member:So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"
Bank:"Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!"
Family Member:"Do you think God will be mad at her?"
Bank:"Excuse me?"

My life lately

Hey everyone,

I never write on here anymore, so I thought I would let you all know that I'm still alive and well. I just got back from Spring Break playing Ultimate Frisbee in Savannah Georgia. We stayed on Tybee Island outside of Savannah and it was gorgeous and sooo much fun! I'm sad to be back at school, but Spring is finally here, so it'll be ok. Only 6 more weeks until the end of the semester and then I get to go to Vegas for a vacation with my friend's family and then enjoy the summer working (I don't know where yet).

Guess who's coming to speak at my school in May . . . the Dalai Lama! Isn't that crazy? I still don't understand why, but Smith and Hampshire students and faculty are the only people who can go, so I'm going to get to see the Dalai Lama and listen to a speech. I just thought that was cool and thought I would let you all know.

Robillards in Guatemala

Kevin and Paul will be traveling to Guatemala for the last two weeks in April.  We are meeting some friends there who operate a non-profit school near Antigua.  We’ll be checking out much of the country, including Tikal, a major Mayan city with a ton of ruins to check out. 

 

Guatemala ended 30 years of civil war in 1996 and has been steadily developing ever since.  This is part of the reason that their school system is not the greatest and why my friends joined Los Patojos – www.lospatojos.org if you want to check them out.

 

I’ll post some more stuff about Guatemala when I get the chance.

Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy.   He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Mary.
 
 He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step.   As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump.   A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.
 
 Managing not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding.   He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood.
 
 He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed.
 
 In the morning, Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room.
 
 She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?"
 
 Flynn said, "Why you say such a mean thing?"
 
 "Well," Mary said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror.

Worst Travel Luck EVER!!!

So it is official...I think I have the worst travel luck ever!

Last time I tried to come home from California was around Valentines Day. Dad and I almost got stuck in Charlotte and when I flew out the next day the airline "lost" my bag for 3 days, just to find out that it was at the Atlanta airport the entire time!!!!!

This time I am flying back for 2 weeks for training for my job. My class (about 50 people, including Internationals) have had plans to go out in NYC for Saint Patrick's day since July!!! Everyone has been really excited all week. This morning I checked my flights several times and everything seemed good to go so my car picked me up and away to the airport we went. In the 30 minutes that it took us to get to the airport my flight got cancelled. I was a little disappointed but figured I could get out tomorrow and still make SOME of the party but unfortnuately I was wrong again!!! I offered to fly out of 3 different airport, into 5 different airports, and this gets me in on Monday night.

To save some money I decided to take a shuttle back to my apartment from the airport instead of the car service. I made friends with my 7 van mates, heard about how one woman teaches english as a second language and used to live in a wigwam, and got a 2.5 hour tour of the Silicon Valley before I got back to my apartment. Needless to say I won't be doing that again any time soon!

So I think that this makes it official...WORST TRAVEL LUCK EVER!!!!

All Settled in California - Part 2

So here are the last few pictures of my apartment...

I love my porch! It's perfect for reading and enjoying a nice glass of wine - and it's really big!



Here is my bedroom. It isn't as cute as my furniture but it's good enough for 8 months!


So you can see the only part of the apartment that isn't unpacked is my dresser...because apparently jewelry boxes aren't in season? Very strange...



I have a really big bathroom too! Lots of storage space of all of my J&J goodies from the e-store!



So that's it. Casa de Andrea is ready for visitors!!!

All Settled in California

I finally arrived in California late Wednesday night and my apartment finally feels like home! I spent the end of the week and weekend unpacking.

All of my stuff that I shipped was supposed to arrive on Friday morning so on Thursday evening I decided to run to the grocery store. I returned to find that I had missed UPS so on Friday morning I had to carry all 13 of my boxes across the apartment complex and up 2 flights of stairs!!! It was my work out for the day!

St. Patrick's Day in Hoboken

This past weekend was the big St. Patrick's Day celebration in Hoboken. Andrea was in town and we had friends over our place to hang out and watch the parade. Hoboken gets a little out of control during the celebrations. The lines at the bars start around 8 AM!!! We didnt make it to the bars, but had plenty of fun enjoying green mimosas to start the day off right. We also watched the parade from our stoop, it doesn't get much better than that!
